ImageSalt...eat no more than 6g a day...! The food standards agency has set a target of reducing the average salt consumption of adults to 6g a day by 2010. Babies and children under 11 should have less salt than adults, less than 1g a day up to 12 months as their kidneys can’t cope with lager amounts.

Breastfed babies get the right amount of salt through breast milk with formula milk containing a similar amount.

The recommended amount for children depends on their age:
1-3 years- 2g salt a day (0.8g sodium)
4-6 years- 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium)
7-10 years- 5g salt a day (2g sodium)
11years plus 6g salt a day (2.5g sodium)

These are the recommended maximums for children it is far better for them to have less.

Remember not to add salt when preparing baby food and do not give babies food that is not specifically for them such as cereals and pasta sauces as these can have a high salt content. Always check the labels even on foods aimed at children; salt content varies hugely between products.

Children’s future health could be affected by too much salt in their diet, it also gives them a ‘taste’ for salty food which in turn means they are more likely to consume more salt when they grow up.
