Tennis As Andy Murray is ranked World No. 3, he also becomes the highest ranked British tennis player ever, beating Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski, who both managed to reach No. 4. Andy has achieved this by working very hard at his game; by practising tennis every day and working out with a trainer at the gym.
There are four ‘grand slams’ tournaments per year which every top tennis player wants to win; Australian Open, (held in January), French Open, (held late May), Wimbledon, (held in June/July) and the US Open, (starting late August). Between these grand slams are the ATP (Association of Tennis professionals) tour for men and the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) tour for women. At all of these tournaments players gain points which help push up their world ranking.

Tennis can be taught to and played by children and adults alike. At Chingford School of Tennis, Highams Park, tennis is taught to 3 1⁄2 year olds up to 83 year olds! The club offers private tuition from beginners to county players and group classes for children and adults, on a pay as you play basis. The club boasts nine acrylic tarmac tennis courts, six of which are floodlit and three of these have a dome over them, for indoor play. From October to May each winter, all nine courts are used for the club members and non-members at competitive prices.

There are several mini tour tournaments held at Chingford School of Tennis and other clubs whereby children as young as five to ten years can compete against each other in a friendly environment. There are also many tournaments for junior players from age eleven years onwards. These tournaments are held at various clubs around the country and work towards Great Britain gaining even more excellent tennis players.
