No matter whether you are six or sixty, if you are keen and want to learn karate, we are there to help you. All we ask is that you do your best and enjoy your class at Waltham Abbey Karate Club or any of our other Karate Clubs. Karate helps one to gain self-confidence, learn self-defence skills and also concentrate and focus clearly. There is little doubt that karate helps children who may have difficulty in concentrating and learning at school, in fact some teachers actively encourage children to take up a discipline such as Karate. People like karate for varying and differing reasons. Enjoyment, the social aspect, self-defence, keep fit, are all reasons why people like to train in their karate club. Children enjoy the discipline that karate brings and they can also get quite competitive with each other in trying to do things well and correctly. To find a good karate club you need to visit first and take a look. Is the class organised? Is there a lot of talking and distraction going on? If so it is likely that it will be difficult to learn. Are the members paying attention to the instructor and following instructions? You need a good learning environment to concentrate on learning the various moves and techniques of Karate. Most Karate clubs will allow you to take a look at their class and most will offer you the chance of a free lesson to see if you like and enjoy the class. It does take quite a bit of effort to learn the basic blocks, punches and kicks of karate - (Kihon), and eventually when one has worked on these techniques for some time, the moves are practised together as a form of self-defence - (Kumite). Later on, sets of pre-arranged moves will be learnt - (Kata) and all of these moves will be used to judge your progress at grading examinations. If you are training twice per week for around three months a grading exam can be attempted. Success at the gradings is shown in the different coloured belts that are worn. Orange, Red, Yellow, Green, Purple, Brown and eventually Black, are the colours used for the various belts that are the result of successful gradings. Some different styles may have different system of belt colours for their gradings. Shotokan Karate is one of three main styles of karate that are popular in England. Karate has been established here for around 50 years and many of the old original instructors have now passed away and new pioneers have taken over. The Waltham Abbey Karate Club is a new club which is a branch of 'Shotokan Karate England'. The classes are on Thursdays at 6.00pm and Saturdays at 10.30am and although the members are mainly new recruits there is a fantastic atmosphere in the club. Some members come along from other clubs in the Chingford or Enfield areas. The club accepts children over the age of six.
